Plantago Major aka Broadleaf Plantain

General info
Plantago major is one of the most abundant and widely distributed medicinal crops in the world. A poultice of the leaves can be applied to wounds, stings, and sores in order to facilitate healing and prevent infection. The active chemical constituents are aucubin (an anti-microbial agent), allantoin (which stimulates cellular growth and tissue regeneration), and mucilage (which reduces pain and discomfort). Plantain has astringent properties, and a tea made from the leaves can be ingested to treat diarrhea and soothe raw internal membranes. There is an abundance of goodness in the plantain. It contains seven flavonoids, beta-carotene, crude fibre, dietary fibre, fat, protein, and carbohydrates. It also contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C, and K. Plantain also contains calcium, chromium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc.
It contains many bioactive compounds, including allantoin, aucubin, ursolic acid, flavonoids, and asperuloside. Scientific studies have shown that plantain extract has a wide range of biological effects, including “wound healing activity, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, weak antibiotic, immuno modulating and antiulcerogenic activity”

Medicinal Uses
For millennia, poultices of plantain leaves have been applied to wounds, sores, and stings to promote healing. The active constituents are the anti-microbial compound aucubin, the cell-growth promoter allantoin, a large amount of soothing mucilage, flavonoids, caffeic acid derivatives, and alcohols in the wax on the leaf surface. The root of plantain was also traditionally used to treat wounds, as well as to treat fever and respiratory infections
Plantain is an alternative, meaning it cleans and corrects impure conditions in the blood. It is also a diuretic so it is useful for bladder and kidney problems and it helps reduce water retention.
It stops itching from insects, stinging nettle, and it can help to draw out poisons from snake bites. (Although keep in mind it is imperative to seek medical help if you have been bitten by a poisonous snake.) Plantain has also been known to help alleviate the pain of poison ivy.
Plantain roots can be powdered and used on toothaches. Using a fresh root by chewing it can bring relief.

Consumption
Broadleaf plantain is also a very nutritious leaf vegetable that is high in calcium and vitamins A, C, and K. Broadleaf plantain is not related to the fruit also known as plantain, which is a kind of banana. Young leaves can be eaten raw but as they get older they tend to become bitter and quite tedious to prepare because the fibrous strands are best removed before use. Some people blanch the leaves in boiling water before using them in salads in order to make them tender.
Plantain can be used to make a tea and use this tea to prepare rice, quinoa or couscous.
