Last summer my Rex program suffered an almost catastrophic setback in finding out that several carry the recessive genes for genetic juvenile cataracts (aka Mooneye). This was the first time it had visibly shown up in this breed for me. I did have prior experience with it in mini rex several years ago (ironically in chocolate based rabbits then too) but since those were purchased rabbits, I culled that mini line immediately. However, in the case of my Rex, I have over 8 years of breedings into this specific litter’s pedigree and ended up with 3 out of 5 being 100% blind prior to 6 months of age. This was also a litter that I was super excited for as I had major improvements in type and fur quality, especially with beautiful thick footpads on their rear feet. Now any and all rabbits from that line that are not physically showing cataracts are being test bred to be marked either carrier or clear. This is a somewhat daunting and very much a time-consuming task as each rabbit to be tested has to have offspring grown out to a minimum of 6-7 months old to see if they keep their vision or not. In most circumstances this line will not be offered for sale, with very few exceptions, until I can verify that it has been bred out of this line. Any carriers that do get sold will be double tattooed with a M+ after their regular tattoo so no chance of mixing them up with any others. If you have further questions about mooneye, feel free to message me. There is also a wonderful group on FB dedicated to eradicating this gene as well
I do not show much beyond county fair at this time but can attempt to get decently posed pics around my work hours. I am trying to work on size and depth with the clear portion of the herd. 3 generation pedigree included if you would like a copy (can print, screenshot or email via Evans software). First shown publicly at the Paris International Rabbit Show in 1924, the Rex breed was recognized internationally as a breed to watch. Imported to the US in 1924 by John Fehr and Alfred Zimmerman. The popularity of the Rex is largely due to the mutation that produces a short, dense velvet-like quality to the fur. Today the Rex remains the number one breed used in fur production due to this unique coat quality. Today the “King of the Rabbits” can be shown in 16 color varieties that showcase that plush and unforgettable fur. – Maximum weight 10.5 lbs.
